موضوع این پژوهش بررسی نقش آب در شکلگیری عناصر معماری، بهویژه فضاهایی که آب در شکلگیری و ساختار آنها اهمیت دارد است. هدف این پژوهش تعریف انواع عناصر و فضاهای مرتبط با آب و بهویژه حوض در باغها و از سوی دیگر بررسی شکلهای مختلف آنها است. روش تحقیق، توصیفی و تحلیلی است، دادهها نخست طبقهبندی و مقایسه و سپس تحلیل شدهاند. مبانی نظری تحقیق بر این نکته استوار است که از یک سو پدیدههای محیطی و اقلیمی و از سوی دیگر کارکرد خود فضای باغ تأثیر در شکلگیری انواع ساختارهای شکلگیری باغ را دارد. نتایج تحقیق نشان میدهد آب نقش اصلی در شکلگیری باغ داشته بهخصوص در نواحی که از نظر آبوهوایی گرم و خشک است و فقدان وجود آب در این مناطق وجود دارد. حوض از غنیترین و عمدهترین سازههای است که در معماری باغ مورد استفاده قرار گرفته و جنبۀ نمادین به فضای باغی داده است، ولی در ادوار مختلف تاریخی کمی دستخوش تغییرات شده است. با توجه به وجود عناصر مختلف در باغ ایرانی، آب مهمترین نقش را در هویت بخشی این معماری را ایفا میکند.
